How to use the o-map

  • Zoom in to 1:15 000 or closer to see the orienteering map. Above that, an overview map is shown. Zooming snaps to the design scales 1:15 000, 1:10 000, 1:5 000, 1:4 000 and 1:1 000; each has its own symbol set.
  • New areas are loaded automatically. The first visit of an area takes a few seconds ("Loading map data"); afterwards it is instant for everyone.
  • Search places, streets and countries in the search field at the top.
  • The buttons on the left show or hide contours and hillshading and measure distances (click points on the map, click the ruler again to finish).
  • Right-click an object to see what it is, when it was last changed and its full change history.
  • 3D View (cube on the left or in the information panel) drapes the map over the terrain from the elevation model, with relief shading. Set the height exaggeration, tilt and direction in the 3D panel; you can also turn and tilt with the right mouse button, with Ctrl or with two fingers.
  • Share a view: "Copy link" in the information panel copies a link to exactly this view (position, zoom and so the scale; a tilted 3D view opens in 3D again). The QR code button shows the same link to scan with a phone; on phones and tablets "Share" opens the system share menu.

Export

Click Export in the information panel. Choose PNG or PDF, the paper size (A4 or custom, in mm or inch), the scale and the position. On the export area map, search for a place or zoom out to find your area, then move the map until the red frame covers what you want to print; "Fit frame" zooms back to it. Maps are rendered at 300 dpi and printed at the true scale. The PDF "Standard" style adds a header with scale, equidistance and date, a north arrow and a QR code; "Blank" contains only the map. North lines are printed every 33.33 mm.

Please always attribute the map: © o-map, © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Vector base map for map makers: choose "OCAD (.ocd)", "OpenOrienteering Mapper" or "DXF" as the format. You get the objects of the area as vector data (georeferenced in UTM, with ISOM numbers) and optionally contours from the elevation model (2.5, 5 or 10 m). In Mapper, "Symbols → Replace symbol set → ISOM 2017-2" gives you the official symbols; in OCAD, load the official symbol set over the map (Symbol → Load Symbols From). The symbol set is chosen automatically: ISSprOM 2019 (sprint) up to 1:5000, ISOM 2017-2 (forest) above; you can also pick it yourself. The contours are a starting point and do not replace LiDAR data.

O-Editor

Register for free and open the O-Editor from the dashboard or the map.

  1. Choose a symbol in the palette on the left and draw it on the map (points: one click; lines and areas: click the vertices, double-click to finish). Tick "Add several identical objects" to draw more than one. The search field above the palette finds a symbol by name, ISOM number (e.g. 206) or key; press / to jump to it.
  2. Click an existing object to edit it: drag vertices to reshape, click a midpoint to add a vertex, or delete it. Choosing another symbol while an object is selected changes its symbol.
  3. Use a satellite or street map as background and lower the o-map opacity to trace objects.
  4. Save changes. Your edits appear on the map for everyone and on the heatmap.

Import an OCAD map: with "Import OCAD map" you add a real orienteering map (.ocd) to the O-Map, if you have the map owner's permission. A georeferenced map (e.g. LV95 or UTM) is placed automatically. Any other you place yourself: click the map where its centre lies, set the rotation and the scale (taken from the file, changeable); the orange frame shows where it will lie. With "Choose a section" you drag a box, and only what lies inside is taken over. An admin checks every imported map.

O-Analyser

Upload the GPX, FIT or TCX file of a training or competition (and optionally a photo of the map) under Dashboard → O-Analyser. Activities can be public or private; public ones appear on your shareable list. The personal heatmap shows all your activities at a glance.

To analyse a run, for yourself or with your coach, write notes directly on the map of the activity: Add notes, then Point or Line, tap the map (a line ends with a double-click or Finish line) and type a short text, e.g. “lost the route here”. Pick a colour, drag notes to move them, and use Undo or Cancel freely: nothing is stored until you Save. Only you can edit the notes; whoever can see the activity sees them too (everyone for a public activity, only you for a private one).
